When the expenses scandal broke last year, Nick came out with a very clear line – that he did not think it right for MPs to be in the property speculation business. He regarded the second home he bought with taxpayers’ money as being on loan to him and he pledged to return any profit he made when he came to sell it to taxpayers.

I remember Cyril coming to the first Hemsworth by-election in Yorkshire in 1991. Our candidate, Val, owned a couple of fast food takeaways and we held a photo op with Val feeding pizza to Cyril. Not surprisingly, the cameras loved it. Cyril was never one to ‘conform’ – he opposed the traditional party stance on capital punishment, nuclear weapons and abortion – and that attitude applied to himself as well.

The couple, aged 85 and 86, were discovered by their carer at their house in Catchall just before 8am. They appeared to be suffering from the effects of breathing in fumes, emergency crews said. They were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske in Truro where both were said to be in a stable condition. But yesterday morning the 85-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been released on bail until December while his wife is still being treated at the hospital

Derriford Hospital has been rated among the bottom three by the Royal College of Surgeons, in an audit which found that only 57 per cent of elderly hip casualties had replacements within 48 hours. The annual audit of hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland covered April 2009 to March 2010. At Derriford, it looked at 426 patients in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Derriford said there had been a marked improvement since the audit.

Critics say the low number signals a poor start to the Government scheme, which will give some of the country’s best schools independence from the curriculum and from local authority funding. In Devon, eight schools have applied to convert to academies, but only three have had the funding approved in time to set the wheels in motion on Monday. A further three have had academy orders confirmed, meaning they are likely to change over later in the academic year. The successful schools are Broadclyst Community Primary, near Exeter, Uffculme School, near Crediton, and St Buryan Primary, Penzance.

A site at Threemilestone on the outskirts of Truro has been put forward as the favoured location for multimillion-pound project following a report by stadium specialists Gardiner and Theobold. The consultants were commissioned in May by Cornwall Council to look at the feasibility of a building a 10,000-capacity stadium, based on social factors, transport, and its environmental and economic impact. It has ruled out Roche, near St Austell, which was also being considered as a potential site.

Mr Charlesworth said: “The roof has been completed redone with local Delabole slate – using the traditional wet layering and scantel method in which you insert pegs in the slate and lay it on lime mortar which holds it in place, rather than using nails

The scale of the humanitarian crisis in the stricken country is immense, with about 1.2million homes destroyed and 20 million people devastated by rising flood waters. Cornish-based international disaster relief charity, ShelterBox, claims to have uncovered hundreds of families marooned in a largely ‘forgotten’ province. As the waters subside in northern Pakistan, more than 300,000 people have been evacuated from Thatta in the southern province of Sindh, as the River Indus swells. And according to ShelterBox Response Team member Mark Pearson, the need in the south is now “absolutely desperate”.

Andrew Curwell, 18, is thought to have mistaken a private lane for a public coastal path when he stepped over a small stone wall and was confronted with a sheer drop near Newquay on June 28 last year. He was making his first visit to the resort and only discovered he was available to take the holiday a few days before he arrived. Mr Curwell was part of a 12-strong group of friends from the Saddleworth area of Lancashire, who had spent the evening drinking as part of an organised bar crawl. An inquest in Truro yesterday heard how the friends drank cider, alcopops and shots before Mr Curwell realised his wallet was missing

The all white crustacean – which has bright red eyes – was caught half a mile out to sea near Mylor in Cornwall. Experts say it is a velvet swimming crab, which is also known as a devil crab. The crab was snared by fisherman Cameron Henry and is being cared for at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.

Carol Jiggins and Janis Cusworth were killed instantly, an inquest heard, after their car crashed into a series of vehicles before ploughing into the tanker during the horrific road crash in Cornwall. The sisters’ red Rover collided with on-coming traffic on a busy section of the A30 near the Loggans Moor roundabout at Hayle, on February 24. Eye-witnesses, some of them visibly traumatised by the incident, told the court how they saw the Rover, being driven by Ms Jiggins, “appear from nowhere” and veer into the path of oncoming vehicles. The car first clipped a camper van, then a following Land Rover which had swerved to avoid the crash.

Paul outpolled Labour, Liberal Democrat and Independent candidates. It is said that this process will cost around £1.9 million in Devon and Cornwall – more than the total cost of the current Police Authority and equivalent to what it costs to put 50 Police Constables on our streets. The Conservative plans are for the elections to take place in 2012 – at a time when the only other elections in Devon or Cornwall are for councillors in Plymouth and Exeter. That means that the total cost everywhere else will be borne by the Police budget and will be around £1.9 million. This is just another reason why directly elected Police Chiefs should not be going ahead.

Some beach users say they dislike dogs being able to roam the beach without a lead, while others have complained about dog mess. But dog users say the beach is a haven for their animals, while some traders fear an impact on their businesses if dog owners are forced to exercise their animals elsewhere. The council members decided a completely restricted or unrestricted access for dogs would not be a compromise for either group, and has instead backed the idea of a partial ban. It is understood that a carer raised the alarm after arriving at the house and becoming concerned for the welfare of the people inside, one of whom it is thought had health problems. A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said the couple, who are in their 80s, were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital at Truro suffering from the effects of inhaling a “noxious substance.” However, it is understood that the substance was not produced from a faulty appliance in the house. It is believed there was a petrol generator in the premises and this was producing the fumes which overpowered the couple. The police spokesman said the couple’s next of kin had been informed and had been to see them in the hospital. The couple are said to be in a stable condition.

A survey this week by the Halifax said detached homes had outperformed all other property types and now sold for an average £299,295. The group said price gains for semi-detached, terraced homes and flats were between 8 and 9 per cent during the year ending in June, considerably higher than figures from the Land Registry. Mr Copus said: “I don’t know where they get these figures from but they certainly don’t relate to Devon and Cornwall. “Detached houses are always going to be worth more but actually, at the top end of the market, prices have dropped because the City bonuses are no longer there.

Devoted Mary Fox, 59, died on November 5 last year when she became trapped in the burning home after the lit firework set fire to the hall. The blaze was started after three yobs were bought fireworks by a parent just hours before they targeted her home. Mary’s family are now demanding the Government introduce new laws which require people to have a licence to buy fireworks. Her daughter Monique Flower, 42, said: “We know we will never be able to ban the sale of fireworks, but they could be better regulated.

Rescue services were alerted to the potential catastrophe just after 5pm yesterday after a giant wave struck the beach at Sidmouth then created a dangerous riptide in its wake as it receded. The children and adult were all funnelled through the beach’s famous rock islands and were struggling to get back ashore. Mark Roden, senior helmsman for Sidmouth Lifeboat, said the rescue crews believed there had been “a real risk” of fatalities. The drama prompted one man to grab a friend’s kayak and paddle out to the children. Meanwhile other people were able to reach some of the youngsters, one of whom is thought to have been as young as seven.

A group of 15 employees from Helston-based Classic Cottages took the term ‘self-catering’ quite literally and ventured out for the two-hour walk along the paths and roadsides around Lamorna, lead by local foraging expert Rachel Lambert. Another group went on a guided walk of Lamorna with the grandson of the artist Lamorna Birch, before stopping off for a well-earned lunch at Lamorna Cove Hotel. The employees at the specialist, quality holiday lettings company are now looking to organise a special lunch later in the year, which will be themed around foraging and will include recipes made using some of the plants that were uncovered during the away day. Kimberley Cox and Penny Forrester have been working for Helston-based Rocket Gardens as part of the ESF Convergence-supported Unlocking Cornish Potential scheme. Started in 2005 by Mike Kitchen, Rocket Gardens provides boxes of baby vegetable and herb plants to order. Vouchers can be bought at any time of the year and redeemed through the website with the plants delivered so they can be grown at home. Unlocking Cornish Potential is a Combined Universities in Cornwall scheme which places graduates with businesses in Cornwall for up to one year as well as offering support from mentors. Organised in partnership with the South West branch of the Institute of Directors (IoD), event co-ordinator Richard Coombs, a corporate partner with the law firm, said: “What we want to do is bring together people with experience, telling it like it is. It said that there were 168 businesses in the health and social services, education and defence sector that went bust in the first six months of 2010, compared to 114 in the first half of 2009. Ian Walker, Exeter-based partner at business recovery and insolvency specialists Begbies Traynor, said that, as yet, public sector suppliers in the Westcountry had not been failing as a result of the cuts. Drivers who don’t know the area often are not aware that they are entering the built-up area of the town and the corners are much tighter than they might expect. As a result, we get cars traveling too fast and sometimes out of control as they go round the bends.

I’m delighted that Cornwall Council has agreed to put some new road markings down to warn drivers that they are approaching a built-up area with tight corners and telling them to slow down.
