  Clegg to hand back second home profit 

  Full marks to Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg for keeping his promise to hand back the profit he makes when he sells his MP’s second home in Sheffield. When the expenses scandal broke last year, Nick came out with a very clear line – that he did not think it right for MPs to be in the property speculation business. He regarded the second home he bought with taxpayers’ money as being on loan to him and he pledged to return any profit he made when he came to sell it to taxpayers.

  Remembering Big Cyril 

  It’s very sad to hear of the passing of Sir Cyril Smith, the former MP for Rochdale and one of the most memorable public figures of the 70s and 80s – even more famous than Lembit is today. I remember Cyril coming to the first Hemsworth by-election in Yorkshire in 1991. Our candidate, Val, owned a couple of fast food takeaways and we held a photo op with Val feeding pizza to Cyril. Not surprisingly, the cameras loved it. Cyril was never one to ‘conform’ – he opposed the traditional party stance on capital punishment, nuclear weapons and abortion – and that attitude applied to himself as well.

  Pensioner arrested on suspicion of attempted murder of his wife 

  ​ A PENSIONER found with his wife with suspected carbon monoxide poisoning on Wednesday morning near Penzance has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The couple, aged 85 and 86, were discovered by their carer at their house in Catchall just before 8am. They appeared to be suffering from the effects of breathing in fumes, emergency crews said. They were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital Treliske in Truro where both were said to be in a stable condition. But yesterday morning the 85-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He has been released on bail until December while his wife is still being treated at the hospital

  Airline key to West image 

  The South West’s continued recovery from the ravages of the recession relies on solid transport links with the rest of the UK and beyond. Air travel plays a key part in this, importing tourists and business travellers and exporting our own products and people abroad and to other parts of the UK. More than 100 years after the first manned, powered flight, air travel also still has a prestige element to it. Having airlines based here and running flights to and from airports here is very much a statement of intent.

  Hospital in bottom three for hip surgery 

  Patients with broken hips in parts of the Westcountry suffer with pain while they face some of the longest waits in the country for replacement surgery. Derriford Hospital has been rated among the bottom three by the Royal College of Surgeons, in an audit which found that only 57 per cent of elderly hip casualties had replacements within 48 hours. The annual audit of hospitals in England, Wales and Northern Ireland covered April 2009 to March 2010. At Derriford, it looked at 426 patients in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Derriford said there had been a marked improvement since the audit.

  Three schools set to convert to academy status in West 

  Just three outstanding schools in Devon and Cornwall will convert to academy status when the new term begins next week. Critics say the low number signals a poor start to the Government scheme, which will give some of the country’s best schools independence from the curriculum and from local authority funding. In Devon, eight schools have applied to convert to academies, but only three have had the funding approved in time to set the wheels in motion on Monday. A further three have had academy orders confirmed, meaning they are likely to change over later in the academic year. The successful schools are Broadclyst Community Primary, near Exeter, Uffculme School, near Crediton, and St Buryan Primary, Penzance.

  Consultants opt for a ‘capital’ spot for county’s purpose-built stadium 

  The city widely regarded as the capital of Cornwall could be home to the county’s first purpose-built stadium. A site at Threemilestone on the outskirts of Truro has been put forward as the favoured location for multimillion-pound project following a report by stadium specialists Gardiner and Theobold. The consultants were commissioned in May by Cornwall Council to look at the feasibility of a building a 10,000-capacity stadium, based on social factors, transport, and its environmental and economic impact. It has ruled out Roche, near St Austell, which was also being considered as a potential site.

  Shop good as new after 19th century makeover 

  A newsagents has been restored to look as good as new – as it looked back in 1874. Cross Street News in Camborne, Cornwall, has been completely restored to its original state thanks to funding from the Townscape Heritage Initiative. Alan and Glyniss Charlesworth have run the shop for seven years – and say they are delighted with the “new” look. Mr Charlesworth said: “The roof has been completed redone with local Delabole slate – using the traditional wet layering and scantel method in which you insert pegs in the slate and lay it on lime mortar which holds it in place, rather than using nails

  ‘Forgotten victims’ of floods helped as ShelterBox steps up its efforts 

  A Westcountry charity which ships essential survival equipment to disaster zones via its trademark green boxes is stepping up its efforts in Pakistan. The scale of the humanitarian crisis in the stricken country is immense, with about 1.2million homes destroyed and 20 million people devastated by rising flood waters. Cornish-based international disaster relief charity, ShelterBox, claims to have uncovered hundreds of families marooned in a largely ‘forgotten’ province. As the waters subside in northern Pakistan, more than 300,000 people have been evacuated from Thatta in the southern province of Sindh, as the River Indus swells. And according to ShelterBox Response Team member Mark Pearson, the need in the south is now “absolutely desperate”.

  Young rugby star fell to death down cliff on holiday in Cornwall 

  A promising Leeds Rhinos rugby player on a last-minute holiday in Cornwall plunged to his death from cliffs after taking a wrong turn while trying to find his wallet, an inquest has heard. Andrew Curwell, 18, is thought to have mistaken a private lane for a public coastal path when he stepped over a small stone wall and was confronted with a sheer drop near Newquay on June 28 last year. He was making his first visit to the resort and only discovered he was available to take the holiday a few days before he arrived. Mr Curwell was part of a 12-strong group of friends from the Saddleworth area of Lancashire, who had spent the evening drinking as part of an organised bar crawl. An inquest in Truro yesterday heard how the friends drank cider, alcopops and shots before Mr Curwell realised his wallet was missing

  Rare albino ‘devil crab’ is caught off the Cornish coast 

  A fisherman was stunned yesterday after snaring this “extremely rare” albino crab off the coast of Britain. The all white crustacean – which has bright red eyes – was caught half a mile out to sea near Mylor in Cornwall. Experts say it is a velvet swimming crab, which is also known as a devil crab. The crab was snared by fisherman Cameron Henry and is being cared for at the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay.

  Sisters died together after their car collided with fuel tanker on A30 

  Two sisters died when their car smashed into a fuel tanker after veering into oncoming traffic and clipping a passing car. Carol Jiggins and Janis Cusworth were killed instantly, an inquest heard, after their car crashed into a series of vehicles before ploughing into the tanker during the horrific road crash in Cornwall. The sisters’ red Rover collided with on-coming traffic on a busy section of the A30 near the Loggans Moor roundabout at Hayle, on February 24. Eye-witnesses, some of them visibly traumatised by the incident, told the court how they saw the Rover, being driven by Ms Jiggins, “appear from nowhere” and veer into the path of oncoming vehicles. The car first clipped a camper van, then a following Land Rover which had swerved to avoid the crash.
